Native to Asia, the giant “Murder Hornet” rips heads off of honeybees by the thousands. It gets more interesting when you consider that at more than two inches long, the worlds largest hornet can kill humans if stung multiple times.
Welcome to 2020 where the hits just continue to roll in. The murder hornet was spotted near Blaine, Washington, in late 2019. The Vespa Mandarinia (aka Murder Hornet) kills up to 50 people per year in Japan.
Unlike the regular hornet which is black and white in color, the murder hornet is large yellow/orange heads with prominent eyes, and a black and yellow striped abdomen.
The hornets have also been spotted in two locations in British Columbia in the fall, according to an article published by Live Science. Extension entomologists are saying the murder hornets are a “health hazard, and more importantly, a significant predator of honey bees. The honey bees have been in decline for the past few years.
The Asian giant hornet’s life cycle begins in April, and are most dangerous from late summer to early fall. Researchers say the sting of a murder hornet is painful and packed with neurotoxins. It has been likened to hot metal going into the skin.
Another detail about the unwanted guest is the hornet can sting through most beekeeper suits, and delivers nearly seven times the amount of venom as a honey bee.
Farmers yearly depend on honey bees to pollinate important crops such as apples, blueberries and cherries. With the threat from giant hornets it put crops in a dangerous spot.
