In 2020, Disney/ Lucasfilm announced that a new Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron, was in development, which was to be directed by Patty Jenkins. Jenkins had other projects, and so the film was put on the back burner. In 2022, the film project was indefinitely paused due to Jenkins’ schedule, then in 2024, it was reported that the project was back on and that the script writing was underway. Now it is being widely speculated that the film is being shifted into a series for Disney+.
In a recent interview, Patty Jenkins said that she and Lucasfilm had resumed talks about Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and that she is working on the script. Where it gets muddy is that some trusted sources are saying it is a movie, while others are suggesting it is indeed being re-developed as a series.

As for the film itself, the basis of the story is a generation of starfighter pilots that is a call-back of sorts to Rogue Squadron from the original Star Wars trilogy. What is missing from the recent surge of news surrounding the project is no date has been given.
While a movie would be believable, there is only one current Star Wars show that has not only been confirmed but has wrapped shooting, Ahsoka Season 2 given some credence that the development may now be geared for a series. There is confusion about what is really going on with the Star Wars project. But for now, it appears to be back on again.
