Michigan secured a new head coach, Kyle Whittingham, who will be introduced at an 11:00 am press conference Sunday morning. While Whittingham is busy getting to know players and their families, he is also putting his staff together. There is also one other thing on his plate; the portal is closed. January 2-16 opens the FBC/FCS timeframe for players to decide where they want to transfer to. The Michigan Wolverines have some key positions that need upgrading or better depth.

To be the program Whittingham likes to run and has enjoyed success, first and perhaps foremost, the focus should be on finding proven player makers at wide receiver. There was no go-to game- breaking WR on the roster this past season. In order to complement QB Bryce Underwood (if he does not transfer) or whoever is under center, the Wolverines need a threat on the outside to stretch the field.
A staple of Whittingham-coached teams is the offensive line play, which is always among the nation’s best. Experienced interior linemen with a focus on center are absolutely needed. Michigan needs more violent play out of the offensive line, as Whittingham’s offense is centered around a good running game. With the talent Michigan has at running back, they could be even better next fall with better interior play.
A proven backup quarterback is also needed. Be it Underwood or a different QB, a good, dependable backup is needed if the starter should miss time or games with an injury.

Defensive line depth is a must, as is an edge rusher. The defensive line did not have the quality of depth needed for the injuries that occurred last season. Edge rushers did not get enough pressure on quarterbacks consistently enough to disrupt and change the course of games.
Kicker/punter, both graduation and poor production make this a big need.
Kyle Whittingham has his own way of approaching the portal, but that does should not mean not addressing needs. He knows that. The key to the portal is to provide the QB with playmakers around him while bringing in talent in other areas of the team that will complement young players on the roster, as well as incoming players for next fall.
