Detroit’s small businesses created 40% of new jobs in 2015 and 2020. Yet Detroit could still see more small business growth, as they are the city’s backbone. The city ranks in the top 100 for startups and growth potential. In 2025, new business applications rose 28%. Despite this, Detroit ranks in the bottom quarter for per capita income and job growth.
Detroit has diverse small businesses, from long-standing to startups. Grants, free consultations, and resources help prospective owners. Assistance is also available for established businesses. Balance among location, product, and consumer needs is necessary.

Suburbs can provide a boost to the overall economy, and that works for certain things. Boutiques, cafes, and local makers such has pottery, art, and clothing can help both in suburban areas as well as the city. This is where there needs to be more attention drawn to the suburbs and their small businesses.
Detroit does have four of the oldest sports franchises, the Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, and Lions, which helps the economy, but it is also self- serving in terms of revenue. With an emphasis and intentionality on small business growth fans that attending a sporting event could be swayed to make a longer trip (if from outside of Metro Detroit) to stay and check out the small business’s around the city and suburbs.

One of my passions is small businesses, and the driving force behind the city’s economy they can be. To help Detroit further continue to thrive and to thrive even more, I would love the opportunity to partner with small business in and around Detroit, and it’s suburbs to do write-ups spotlighting each business with the goal of growing that field. The more exposure, the more growth in employees, revenue, and perhaps even more important, word of mouth.
