When the Detroit Red Wings broke training camp, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård was one of the rookies who made the opening night roster. Brandsegg-Nygård appeared in nine games before being returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. The nine-game stint was a bit of a mixed bag as the young forward recorded one assist, two penalty minutes, 14 shots, and 28 hits. The Red Wings reassigned him to the AHL to continue his development, gain more confidence, and avoid burning through an entry-level contract (ELC). With recent hot play, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård earned another chance.
As Steve Yzerman prepares the Red Wings for a playoff appearance, the Grand Rapids Griffins are also headed to the playoffs. If Brandsegg-Nygård performs well, he will make Yzerman’s decision difficult: go back to Grand Rapids to help the Griffins or stay in Detroit and gain NHL playoff experience.

There are elements of his game that suggest that when he develops more, the Red Wings will have a solid player. Brandsegg-Nygård excels at puck protection, with a heavy, quick -release. He has refined his defensive game and has grown in responsibility, allowing him to gain time on the penalty kill and transform into a strong two-way player.
March 1, 2026, Brandsegg-Nygård was named AHL Player of the Week as he recorded 6 points (5 goals, 1 assist), including a 3 point game in just three games. It is no secret the Red Wings need more scoring, and though the organization traded for David Perron, they are looking from within to find the scoring.

The Red Wings are counting on the red-hot Brandsegg-Nygård to continue his recent play at the NHL level. Leading to a question, which is better for a young players development, the AHL or NHL after they have done the necessary things to improve their game or clean up aspects that have held them back.
In 50 games with the Griffins, the young forward posted solid numbers, 16 goals, 21 assists, 37 points, 24+/- while defining his play at both ends of the ice.
