The Detroit Red Wings shocked many in the 2019 NHL Entry Level Draft by selecting Moritz Seider 6th overall. The shock has now well worn off, and Seider is living up to his pre-draft projection. A big mobile defenseman with elite hockey sense, strong defensive instincts, and a very good puck mover with high leadership qualities.  Detroit and the rest of the NHL are seeing it all unfold.

Through 37 games, Seider has a career high in goals, points, plus/minus, game-winning goals, and logging minutes. Nothing rattles Seider, and he is always calm on the ice. Being paired with Simon Edvinsson seems to have pushed his game to the top, but it still feels like he has more to give.
Seider has become more selective with his shot selection, which has led to more time on the Red Wings power play. Analytics advanced metrics Evolving Hockey GAR/WAR rank Seider as the most impactful player overall. That includes being ranked higher than Connor McDavid and Cale Makar.
Seider was named one of Detroit’s alternate captains by Todd McLellan before the start of the 2025-’26 season. Seider has taken full control of the position he has been put in and is a louder voice in the locker room as well. As the Red Wings missed out on trading for Quinn Hughes, it looks like Seider has taken his game to the next level. As noted, he is paired with   Simon Edvinsson.

Edvinsson’s strong defense, elite skating, transition play, and vision have been a big compliment to Seider. The two young defensive players are considered one of the best pairings in the NHL for their shutdown ability, complementary skills, and strong performances against elite NHL competition.

As the Detroit Red Wings have been more consistent this season, Seider and Edvinsson have played a huge role in the team’s success.
