The NHL trade deadline has come and gone, and while the Detroit Red Wings and GM Steve Yzerman did not make “sexy” moves, the right moves were made. Yzerman noted that the team’s performance this season warranted adding to the roster. Yzerman’s first move was to bring back a familiar face, F- David Perron, sending a conditional 2026 fourth-round draft pick to the Ottawa Senators. Perron, who has been out since January after undergoing core hernia surgery, adds depth and grit. Then Yzerman made a bigger splash, sending Justin Holl, Dmitiri Buchelnikov, a 2026 first-round draft pick, and a 3rd round pick (from the San Jose Sharks) to the St. Louis Blues for D- Justin Faulk.

It is no secret the Detroit Red Wings have played well and then collapsed in March the past few seasons only to miss the playoffs. By adding Perron and Faulk, Detroit hopes to change its recent March failures and get into the playoffs. Perron will add much needed grit and physicality to a lineup that needs it . Faulk should slot onto the second pair with Ben Chiarot, giving the Red Wings four solid defensive pairings.

Adding both David Perron and Justin Faulk does not mean the team will avoid another March collapse; it does, however, suggest that with the two new players, Detroit has a better shot to sustain play, get into the playoffs, and see what happens. The team must stay focused, and players need to step up and show that Yzerman was justified in buying at the deadline.
