Maul Is A Complex Character Who May Be The Best Written

For the Star Wars fans who love “Rebels,” there is no doubt that Maul strengthened the show. Now headlining “Maul Shadow Lord,” currently streaming on Disney+, it has become clear he is one of, if not the best, written characters Star Wars has to offer. Transforming from a one-note combat villain in “The Phantom Menace” to becoming a true menace.

Maul, who was left for dead after being sliced in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, was rehabilitated by Mother Talzin, the leader of the Nightsisters, in the “Clone Wars.” The former Sith Lord reappeared as a mastermind who was bent on finding and killing Kenobi. Being left for dead by Palpatine Maul would take a different path.

In “Rebels,” he declared himself, “Formerly Darth, Now Just Maul,” having stopped serving his former Sith master. Having been cast away, Maul lives in a state of constant bitter frustration as his grasps at victory are met by mere misses. The now independent Maul took over Crimson Dawn with a goal of taking the Empire down.

Now burning with rage against the Jedi and the Sith, Maul would become his own leader, free of either ideology. Given his own vendettas (centered around Kenobi), becoming a tragic figure and giving in to revenge while using charm and others’ own emotions to propel his plans forward make the Son of Dathomir a true menace.
