Debating If The Detroit Red Wings Were Right In Sending Axel Sandin-Pellikka To The AHL

Axel Sandin-Pellikka, who is one of the Detroit Red Wings, was sent back to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Pellikka, who appeared in 63 games for the Red Wings, recording 6-13-19, with 16 penalty minutes, 62 shots, and 51 blocked shots, while periodically flashing good defensive plays. Unfortunately, like many first-year defensemen in the NHL, Pellikka’s inconsistent play in the defensive zone caught up to him. That is why Monday afternoon’s news was not a total shock.

The talented Pellikka started the season is promising fashion before seeing his production begin to dip with just one goal and four assists through the beginning of December, which started the whispers. Praised for his puck movement for good reason and his offensive ability, but as a defensemen struggles with gap control and is not physically strong enough to outmaneuver opposing players, which takes its toll.

Pellikka saw a sharp decrease in ice time, which was head coach Todd McLellan’s choice, a move viewed as “tough love.” If a player wants ice time or more of it, it needs to be earned, which Pellikka never firmly did. Hot and cold play does not cut it in any sport, but as a defensive player in the NHL, that is just not acceptable.

When the Red Wings traded for Justin Faulk, the writing was on the wall. It was not a matter of should but when the move would be made. So was this the right call to make? Yes. It had become clear that Pellikka was struggling with confidence, which does the team and player no good.

In Grand Rapids, he will have the opportunity to get valuable minuets and join the Griffin for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Would he have gained valuable learning moments should the Red Wings make the playoffs? For that to even happen, he would have had to earn ice time.
Detroit was smart in letting a player who figures to play a big role in the future hit the reset button and get his confidence back.

Come on Brian. You know Pellikka needed to be sent down. I think he’s going to be okay but sitting in the scratch box was doing him any good.
