The Detroit Lions Fill Needs With The First Two Picks Of The 2026 NHL Draft

Coming off a season in which the Detroit Lions experienced significant regression, coupled with inconsistent play along the offensive line. The once-pillar unit struggled with communication, pass blocking, and run blocking. The team chose to move on from long-time tackle Taylor Decker and focus on rebuilding the line. On the defensive side of the ball, the Lions have been searching for a bookend edge rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson. Through two rounds, the Lions have improved the key areas of the team.

Blake Miller, OT Clemson: The 6’6 3/4″ Miller was the Lions first round draft pick at #17. It is easy to see why GM Brad Holmes zeroed in on Miller. The OT excels in run blocking, pass blocking, toughness, and awareness. The other factor is that Miller plays snap to whistle no let up. Miller plays with an above-average pad level, sets strong needs to work on hand placement, which is an easy clean-up.

Holmes would then address the glaring defensive need in round two, trading up six spots with the New York Jets, giving the Jets pick #50 in the second round and #128 in the third round, and selecting Derrick Moore at #44.
Derrick Moore, Edge, Michigan: The 6’4″ Moore has a lot to like and things to work on, but it is easy to see why Detroit moved up to get their guy. Moore has an exceptional arm reach; he prefers to play stand-up deployment and has an explosive first step. Pass rush, toughness/motor, and versatility are his trademarks. He needs to work on run defense. Moore is at his best when he attacks inside the gaps. Dan Campbell belies the coaching staff can help Moore’s run game defense, and this looks like a really good pick by Detroit.

Through two rounds, the Lions have done a good job at addressing needs. Miller and Moore will now need to do the work in order to gain playing time. It looks like both players will be longtime members of the Detroit Lions.
