With the lackluster box office performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu , it appears that the film was just being used as a means of reintroducing Star Wars to theaters. It is said that Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set for release on May 28, 2027, is the film that Disney/Lucasfilm is counting on to begin to lift fan support, which has lagged in recent years. The Shawn Levy directed Star Wars project has a solid cast highlighted by Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, and Matt Smith.
Star Wars: Starfighter is drawing some curious interest from fans and from media members. The overarching premise of Starfighter is that a veteran pilot (Gosling) must protect his Force-sensitive nephew. The story is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker.

Shawn Levy said the film is in post production and there is a rough cut. Recently, Lucasfilm co-president Dave Filoni gave his vision for Star Wars moving forward. Rather than making a certain quota of shows and movies, the plan is for a linear, interconnected narrative that connects multiple projects together.

Filoni will meet with directors and creators to weave a cohesive story and not have any “enforced errors.” It is not clear right now whether the plan is to use Filoni’s “Mandoverse” as a focal point for Star Wars moving forward. The reason Star Wars: Starfighter is so important to the future of the franchise is that new characters must be embraced by the fans as well as the storytelling.
Those factors were a source of contention with the Star Wars fan base for the entire Sequel Trilogy. If the film is successful, it will open more opportunity for Filoni’s creative team to find new avenues to take Star Wars. If it flops, it would do serious damage to an already damaged franchise.
